Subject: Re: AC in 9-3 SE

My 9-3 SE AC was also having very erratic and inconsistent problems like you describe. Sometimes it worked perfectly, other times, when it was clear the temperature was far above the set programmed temperature, it wouldn't cool appropriately on its own. I went through the manual and played with all the custom programmable settings figuring that I had just set something incorrecltly, but nothing seemed to eliminate the problems. I had a number of small annoyances that needed to be fixed so I took it in to the dealer. They ended up replacing the entire display and Automatic Climate Control unit. We 've only had it back about a week, but so far all the problems seem to be gone. On another note...My wife and I trade off driving the car a lot and we noticed that the seat position memory switch wasn't keeping its presets. We finally figured out that when we were each getting in/out we would sometimes accidentally depress the memory and one of the numbered preset buttons simultaneously with our legs (you could hear a 'beep' when getting in/out of the car), thereby overwriting the previously stored settings. The dealer had never heard of anyone complaining about it before but told me he would call SAAB to find out if they had. Sure enough SAAB has redesigned the switch so that it doesn't register the buttons being depressed until after they are pushed farther below the surface of the faceplate they are mounted in. They haven't issued any sort of technical service bulletin to inform the dealers of the problem but are quietly replacing the poorly designed switch for owners who complain. Some of the problems we have had: 1)defective fuel tank sending unit - gauge never read higher than 3/4 full 2) torn back seal of convertible top 3) turning signal would not self-cancel on left hand turns 4) 'clunking/banging' sound when going over bumps - turned out to be some type of suspension problem they were able to repair quickly 5) ACC display showed jumbled numbers/characters when interior got too hot 6) ACC operated inconsistently 7) Seat memory problems ( above ) Other than these minor irritations, which I don't think should have been present on a new 45000 car, we love having it. Its our first SAAB and it is a pure joy to drive. I thouroughly commend Momentum SAAB's service department in Houston, TX. for quickly resolving all of the above problems.
