Here's an, excerpt from the SAAB archives on this subject: [the] gearbox > kind of whine[s] intermittently when I disengage the clutch. It's > also there as I engage it and is gone when I'm engaged in any gear.I had similar symptoms on my '90 900 Turbo at 23,000 miles. The clutch throwout bearing had to be replaced. The sound I heard was akin to alight metallic rubbing, a quick "sssshhhh sshhhhh shhhh" sound that eminated from beneath the car while the clutch was disengaged. Cold weather made it worse. Tapping the clutch pedal would occasionally stop the noise.Scott ==================Message from paulwnopsamfcc2.pafc.hp.com (Paul Welch) ------------------I had a very similar problem with my MAZDA, so keeping the different manufacturers in mind, perhaps the problem is a bad input shaft bearing. In my case the part was really inexpensive (<$5), but the labor was fairly intense. Nothing difficult, just a lot of nuts and bolts toundo. Unfortunately I had to do it all twice because my first guesswas the throw-out bearing. I knew by the time I had it out of thedriveway that guess #1 was wrong. The input shaft bearing is pressed into the rear of the crankshaft (if memory serves), and supports the front end of the input shaft of the transmision. With the clutch disengaged, this is the only means of support for the input shaft at the front end, so if the bearing is bad, the shaft wants to "whiparound."A good mechanic should be able to diagnose the problem and differentiate between input shaft bearing noise and throw-out bearing noise Andy Evans wrote in message ... > > The "normal" noise I'm talking about is *really* faint - if the radio's on, >an airplane flies over, another car idling nearby, and you won't hear it.> >That's pretty much what I am getting - the noise starts about half the way >up the travel when you let the clutch out, and is a whirring noise - I >suppose faint in comparison with louder noises, but clearly audible all the >same unless travelling at speed with the windows open.
