Subject: Re: Gearbox whine - please interpret what it means.

The "normal" noise I'm talking about is *really* faint - if the radio's on, an airplane flies over, another car idling nearby, and you won't hear it.> That's pretty much what I am getting - the noise starts about half the way up the travel when you let the clutch out, and is a whirring noise - I suppose faint in comparison with louder noises, but clearly audible all the same unless travelling at speed with the windows open. This occurs when the car is stationary, out of gear, with the motor running, and seems a 'fixed' pitch not one which goes up and down in frequency - is that what you mean?> The "worn bearing" noise is very similar, but occurs at different times. If >you hear the noise when the car is moving, and it varies with speed, you're hearing the bearings, and this is bad. >> This is a quite different sound - a sort of whiny chord (bit like a sort of synthesized orchestral string section with a preponderance of violas and cellos) which is very audible and goes up and down with movement. This only occurs when the car is going and in gear. <<How bad? That's hard to tell. If there are no other symptoms, you might be able to ignore it for a while. But if it starts popping out of gear and things like that, you know it's rebuild time! And, there's always the possibility of sudden failure, even if it's *not* making noises.>> Not jumping out of gear, though first is notchy. >Only way to be really sure is dismantle the transmission and give everything a good looking-over. And that's not a job for the faint of heart! Eric>> Not very easy even for the courageous living in a second floor flat in London with no pit or garage!! Living room floor - just move the furniture for the weekend and put bin liners on the carpet??? I envy all you country dwellers...... > >Andy Evans <arts.psychologynopsamm.net> wrote in message >news:Xsdw3.7341$Yu4.263880nopsam2-hme0.mcmail.com... >> >In my experience, there's only one tiny exception to this: at idle in >> >neutral if you listen really hard as you let the clutch in and out, you >can >> >hear a tiny "whirring" noise caused by the gear teeth hitting each other. >> >But out on the road, the other noises of the car easily mask this.>> >> I'm so glad you mentioned this, since I get exactly this faint whirring >> noise and wondered whether it was normal or not.
