Andy, That's a tough question to answer. The "normal" noise I'm talking about is *really* faint - if the radio's on, an airplane flies over, another car idling nearby, and you won't hear it. The "worn bearing" noise is very similar, but occurs at different times. If you hear the noise when the car is moving, and it varies with speed, you're hearing the bearings, and this is bad. How bad? That's hard to tell. If there are no other symptoms, you might be able to ignore it for a while. But if it starts popping out of gear and things like that, you know it's rebuild time! And, there's always the possibility of sudden failure, even if it's *not* making noises. Only way to be really sure is dismantle the transmission and give everything a good looking-over. And that's not a job for the faint of heart!
