Subject: strange idle



My 90 Saab 900T recently developed a strange idle pattern. It revs from 1000
to about 1200- 1300 and then drops back down again and repeats this
continuously. Also, I noticed a strange hissing noise from behind the
dashboard, AC compressor maybe?
What could be causing this?

Any help would be appreciated.
