If the odor is more noticeable while driving w/ the windows/sunroof open vs with the windows shut (and the ventilator fan running), I would suspect a problem in the fuel tank and/or filler pipe. Could also be in the fittings for the fuel pump or fuel guage sensor. We had this problem on an older 900 and although there was no visible fuel leak, vapors were being emitted through a cracked filler pipe. Replacing the filler pipe fixed the problem.
