Although I don't know about the 9-3, my wife has a 97 900 SE. We got the car in September of 97 for a steal ($24,200) and have had no problems with it. There are some things that I would do differently in the car, but I think they fixed most of those with 9-3. There are little things about the suspension set-up and the chassis stiffness that only someone who had driven Saabs for years would notice. Having driven them for 17 years (and being consider a newcomer in Saab circles), they kind of bug me. I still drive my 90 SPG. As far as problems, we have had none.......0, zip, zilch that can be considered the fault of the car. My wife has managed to destroy 3 wheels at $300 a piece but you would not have that problem in a standard 9-3. The SE has 16" wheels and 50 series tires while I think the standard car has 15" wheels. As far as the automatic, I wouldn't touch it. Not because you will have problems with it, but because you are taking the fun out of the car and paying an extra $1000 for it. Good luck...and welcome to the club.
