Subject: Instrument Rheostat - Smoking! - Replacable??

Hi, I have bought a 1991 3-door 16v 900i and it has been abused during it's life. Anyway I'm managing to fix most things... Turned the instrument rheostat to see if it was working then there was a quite abit of smoke from behind the dash! and then all the dash and instrument lights went out!! All the fuses are ok The only wierd thing now is that the "up shift" light comes on when you turn the ignition on but goes out when the lights are turned on I suspect it is an earthing (grounding) problem in the back somewhere Can the rheostat be changed?
