Had exactly that problem recently on my 87 9000 turbo. Also noticed black
smoke coming from the tail and bucking on hard acceleration. All this from
running too rich.

My mechanic loaned me a known-good air mass meter. Made an AMAZING
difference: smooth acceleration right to 5500, no black smoke, no bucking on
hard acceleration, and best of all, 15% better fuel mileage. Will have paid
for itself pretty soon...

Got one used from www.saabdepot.com. Also qot a quote from
www.saltfreesaabs.com.
