I found that when running the engine (16v turbo) with the APC system disabled (pull of the pipe from solenoid to wastegate actuator), the engine is actually far smoother. I never once feeled anything like pre-detonation. I know what real detonation problems are like. The first engine I built had the wrong carb jetting etc. and would spit flames back through the carb sometimes! Like an idiot I didn't worry about it and thought I would just fix it after a couple of weeks. The engine was dead in 2 weeks! When we pulled it apart the piston rings were screwed. I follow the advice given to me by one of TurboTechnics experts (BTW these guys are world renowned, the company founder worked on the first SAAB turbo). He said "You can almost never have enough inter-cooler" and "If uprating the power always improve the inlet charge cooling first". These should be written in stone and put on every engine tuners garage wall. BTW if you are serious about water injection a company called ERL here in the UK make a neat computer controlled system.
