The mitsubishi turbo is specifically for low boost applications if on say 2 litre 16 valve engine i.e it is used on the LPT engines, the fully blown ones use a Garrett T3. The reason why you feel an increase in performance is because the small mitsubishi turbo can be spun up very easilly by very little engine load. I have heard many people talk about putting bigger and bigger turbos on the engine but there is actually very little sense in doing this. A bigger turbo will require more loading from the exhaust and will hence cause the car to have worse turbo lag. I would always go for the smallest turbo possible and in fact the optimum for the 2 litre 16v engine is probably a T2.5 turbo rather than the T3, since it is unlikely you will ever want more than about 220-230 BHP. You can see this in nearly all turbo cars over the last 15 yrs or so. Manufacturers have been going towards smaller and smaller turbos since it leads to a much better engine i.e. more torque lower down and less turbo lag. BTW my SAABtech hates the mitsubishi turbo, he says it is expensive and doesn't seem to last any longer than the Garrett's. Yours,Neil. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
