Subject: Re: 900 turbo v injection

M.H.: Obviously what car's best for you depends on what you want. But, let me give you a few general opinions: 1) Turbos are less reliable than non-turbos, but not a *lot* less reliable. They lend themselves to harder driving, which tends to consume CV joints and suspension parts somewhat faster. Turbochargers tend to fail if the oil is not changed frequently, particularly with the older, non-water-cooled turbos (pre '89 for the 900 model, pre '87 for the 9000). The turbos are *much* more fun to drive! 2) 5-speed vs. auto: others will disagree with this, but in my experience the classic 900 automatic tranny is a bit more reliable than the 5-speed, which is prone to various failures at middle-age (usually between 125K and 175K miles). OTOH, the auto takes a lot away from the performance of the turbos, and reduces fuel economy a bit. Some autos are prone to having the transmission oil cooler fail, which can cause antifreeze and ATF to mix. This is very bad both for the transmission and for your cooling system hoses. Personally, I'll go with the 5-speed every time. 3) Personally, I don't think the 8V motor has too much to recommend it, except possibly price. The 8V requires valve adjustment, doesn't perform as well, and gets worse gas mileage. It also has a fuel-injection system that is prone to driveability problems. Turbo or not, I'd go with the 16-valve. Happy Saabing!
