Adam, I did a side-by-side test of the Volvo C70 and Saab 9-3 HOT convertibles for Business Week in April. After a couple weeks driving both, on highways, back roads, and NYC streets, I found the Volvo to be more luxuriously appointed and roomier in the back, but the Saab to be a more fun drive. Its 5-speed manual is head and shoulders above the sluggish and quirky auto 4 in the Volvo offered here. The Volvo exhibits pronounced cowl shake, unlike the Saab's stiffer body, on bumpy roads. While both cars are high in the rear, my wife and I both found the Volvo's rear visibility to be poor. There have also been some serious questions about the reliability of the automatic top mechanism in the Volvo. The 1998 model line of C70s was basically pulled off the market here and sent back to Sweden for repair, with remaining models given to dealer personnel to drive. A Volvo exec and I both had a hard time with the top refusing to lock down properly in the open position--and if it doesn't lock, you can't go. Rgds.
