Paul- If you had said that your car knocks and grinds I would have been baffled but the whirring/tapping is probably caused by the engine's need for attention. My 9000 makes a whining sound unless I rub her under the driver's side dash. Particularly when she is cold. When I tell Inga (that's my car's name) that I am sory I let her get cold and that she is the best little car in the world she purrs like a kitten and warms right up. Don't worry the noise is normal...a little TLC goes a long way though.
