The stiffness in your steering is a sign that the rack will have to be changed in the near future. Having no fluid in the system did not help it at all. Once you replace the rack, the fluid should be flushed once every two years or 24,000 miles. That will extend the life of the rack. I don't know if your check engine light is the same as the exhaust on my old 83 900T. If it is, there is a reset button on the steering column. You have work your hand up inside to get to it. It was the same on my 87 900S 16V. I have an 87 9000S now.
