Subject: Re: '94 900SE Snow Tire Size

Hi Barry: I live in south-central Wisconsin, and the winters vary from not much snow at all to a fair amount (>80", with several 12" snow falls). On my '84 900 S, I use 195/60/R15 for summer tires, and usually 185/65/R15 in the winter. The winter tires are Hakka NR09, and work well. The rational for a somewhat narrower tire is that it doesn't tend to "float" quite as much in deep snow or slush. Based on that notion, I foolishly tried a much narrower profile last year (165/??/R15) - big mistake! While it worked well in the snow, it was really squirrely when dry, and had poor grip on ice - not enough surface area for the weight of the car with lateral force during a turn.
