Subject: Re: need help on buying 85 900S

About two months ago I purchased my '85 900 4-door for $1000. The body and paint are in great shape and it had 181k miles on it. It needs tires and I replaced the waterpump along with wipers and belts. Since then I've put 2500 miles on it 350 of which were at last weekends SAABtoberfest event. The car looks great and runs great, I love it! It's worth more than the grand I payed for it. I've gotten many compliments on the car both from Saab enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts. At SAABtoberfest I met a couple that had the 1986 900 4-door with the same maroon-brown color and they also complimented me on it. So on the surface $2000 for a turbo with 93k on it sounds like a deal. But -there always is a but- in my mind I would ask around about that power steering leak that could cost you some cash. Also I would look at the turbo closely that too can set you back a bit. And you should question the replacement of the wiring harness. The couple I met with the '86 900 had around 140k on their car if memory serves me correctly, so 93000 on an '85 is great that means that they only put 6600mi on it per year. At that rate I would need to put my '85 in storage for the next 14 years so that you would catch to me mileage-wise. Don't get me wrong I love my 900 it's awesome, it runs like a quality car and at 14 years old handles like it's on rails. After running at the Saab event last weekend I want my next Saab to be a turbo. Going up those Pennsylvanian hills (i.e. mountains) makes you a believer in the mighty turbo. If you do a lot of your own work this could be a good deal for you especially if you talk him down to $1000. Good luck and let us know how you made out. Regards, Simon.
