I had always assumed (possibly incorrectly) that the winshield frame
structure would provide some insurance to guarantee a certain safety space
in the event of a roll over.
To my knowledge there is no pop-up roll bar such as equipped in 1987 and
later Mercedes Benz convertibles (though this feature didn't see the
American market until much later).
