Subject: restoring 91-900i 4dr front grille finish

My 91 900i 4dr has a black grille with little flecks of silver speckled over it where the original finish used to be. The salesman said that it was quite common for the original finish to wear away like this. (Maybe scrubbed off through years of automatic carwashing). Seeing a 3dr waiting for a service in the dealers carlot I noticed it was faded and dull silver but not quite as worn as mine. The salesman reckoned they were not a chrome finish but more like aluminium. There are not many saabs around where I live and I am yet to come across one with the grille in original condition so I am yet to see first hand what the finish originally looked like. Can anyone help me with this. Was it a mirror finish chrome, silver paint or high buff or brushed aluminium look. If it isn't a mirror chrome I would like to restore it myself. I can't quite tell from photos on the web. If anyone has had success restoring there own to original, what did you use? Thanks Dom :-) Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
