Is there anything I should look for > in these years - trouble spots etc? > > Thank You > Stewart Stewart - depends if you can do your own service work etc but besides the usual checks for service history/stolen/crashed when looking at saabs, plus smoky engines etc Don't Worry about: High Mileage 100,000+ Saabs go on forever Worn clutches, they are easy to change Guages that don't seem to read correctly - often dirty earths Slow electric windows - they are quite easy to take apart and fix crunchy gearboxes - could be the clutch or worn syncos - it's not the fastest box on the planet and you become quite good at double declutching!! Soggy tailgate struts - easy to change worry about: Crash damage - unless it's been repaired well. Rusty bonnets - they all seem to go in the same places - leading edge and near the back where they are double skinned. - between £20 -£50 at the scrappy's or £300+ from Saab Metallic paint - doesn't seem to last as well as solid colours Brakes - especially the none vent type on the older vehicles as they are marginal in regard to performance and must be in tip top condition. Creeking suspension - check for soggy springs and shockers Smoky Turbos - If you see one check for blue smoke from cold - make sure if you see a car it is cold when you first see it - if it's "been warmed up 'cos you were coming round" beware rattling 16v timing chains - could go on for another 100,000 miles, but they are expense to get changed at a garage. Rusty sun roofs - bugger to change. Front chassis legs where the lower wishbone bolts on - sometimes corrode and are a pain to weld up. plus the panel undet the battery. Rattling turbos - its on the way out other things: Older 8v seem to eat exhaust systems - I have a 1986 900 which needs a new one about every 2-21/2 years, however I do live out in the sticks with rough country roads. the 1992 900 16v we have has a rattling timing chain which I must change soon. Parts from the local Saab dealer are expensive (no surprise)but there are plenty of others selling bits and pieces via mail order etc etc. Just my thoughts on them and what I have seen on ours - touch wood in the 7 years we have had the 1986 one besides flat tyres and an exhaust falling off it has been very reliable. the 16v we shall see as I have only had it 3 months. They are not the fastest cars on the planet either (turbos excepted) but the handling can be improved along with performance to make them more fun. Good luck Malc Scotland Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
