Sounds like the linkage. I've only dealt with a 99 linkage (and the dreaded '83-'84 bad 900 trannys.) Get under the car directly below the shifter and take a look. You may be able to find the loose linkage there. Also (underneath the car) look by the firewall where the linkage meets the transmission. To dig deeper, you mentioned the "worn forks" possibility. My friend had an '81 with the forks basically gone. Give these a check also. Good luck.
