What > is the best to use? > > Jack Beeler > http://beta.communities.msn.com/SAABSonettIIIClub/homepage As I recall, the EP designation indicates "Extreme Pressure", that is, Hypoid gear oil. The pressure of the hypoid gears will squeeze out a standard gear oil. Of course, nobody has used anything but Hypoid gears in a differential for at least 30 years, which is why they probably don't mention it anymore. Another recollection, those old gearboxes had very close tolerances in the needle bearings carying the gear clusters, and were prone to oil starvation when cold. I have a 96 transmission that I had rebuilt with bushings rather than needle bearings, and it seems to have helped. But back to oil selection, it needs to be thin to get into the needles before it warms up. I recall that standard 90 weight was death to the gearbox, and I wouldn't trust a 80w-85w-90 rating, since the 80w or 85w refers to pour point (cold temperature, around 32 F) while we are concerned with viscosity at moderate temperatures (60-90 F). Somebody out there, like Red Line or other specialty lubricant firm, must still make a 75w-80 gear lube, but I haven't looked in quite a while. But take my advice with a grain of salt, I'm not a lubrication engineer, I've just talked to a few. Tim Keck Lots of 96's in the past (mostly 2 stroke) '72 Sonett III (for sale)
