Hmm... maybe I wasn't really clear enough. My point really was that the passengers are protected at the cost of the car... the passenger compartment is the most rigid part of a Saab, but it has crumple zones around the front which mean in a front-end collision the car will more likely be toast than some others on the road. Simply put, if the front end of the car was as rigid as the passenger compartment, then the impact of a collision would throw your body all over the place inside the car, probably causing you more damage. The crumpling provides for some absorbtion of the forces at work. I believe the rear end of the average Saab also crumples nicely in a rear end collision...
