This is a standard feature on most all recent 900/ 9-3's. The car runs a check on all the lights when you start up, and it needs you to step on the brake to test those lights. It will also tell you when your headlight bulbs burn out, as one of mine did last week. Since the car has to be in Reverse for the key to go in and out, having your feet on the clutch and brake is probably a good idea also safety wise, and probably one of the reasons for the message. If you start the car with one foot on the brake, you won't see the message.
