Never heard of it happening before. Looks like a clean snap, not even a jagged break. I complained about a juddering problem with the front suspension of my 1998 9-5SE sedan, and was told there was a known defect and they replaced a component (don't know what) but yours is in the rear, so it's not that! Saab were supposed to beef up the rear suspension for the estate waggon - perhaps something went wrong with the redesign, or more likely, your component may have had faulty heat treatment and become brittle - sure looks like a brittle fracture to me. it looked like a bit of broken cast iron, not steel.
