Subject: Re: 10W-30 better than 5W-30?

I'm no expert.... I post stuff as I find it and hopefully our discussions lead us to a better understanding of the subject. I would think that any Mobil 1 product approved for the Saab should be excellent. The finer points would be that the 0W-40 would do well at cold starts and sub zero temperatures. For leisurely city driving OW-40 seems like it should be fine. But if temperatures are rarely below 0F and you have the frequent 100 mph blasts on the M1 the Mobil 1 10W-30 might be better...IF THE ARGUMENT IN THE ARTICLE IS CORRECT. 5W-30 has a wider range than 10W-30 and as such needs more Viscosity Index improvers... VI's are polymers that 'curl up' with temperature and thicken the oil. These polymers can burn and leave ash, or they can shear and the oil can lose viscosity. Also the VI's replace the basestock and the friction modifiers or extreme pressure agents.... so less VI or no VI may be better. Mobil 1 10W-30 does not need VI modifiers... so all things equal the 10W-30 should be better > >When you say multi-vis, don't you really mean multi-grade ? > >A 5W-30 oil will have a narrower viscocity range than a 10W-30 by >the definition of these numbers. The reference is a single grade >oil which has a nominal large viscocity range, thus multi-grades >were introduced in order to narrow the viscocity range. > >For this reason I was considering using a syntetic Mobil 0W-40 for >my SAAB because of cold and short driving, but you explain that viscocity >and lubrication performance are not necessarily the same thing.
