Not a regulation per se. It's an attempt by SAAB to meet US CAFE (Corporate Annual Fuel Economy) mandates. CAFE stipulates an annual average fuel economy figure for a manufacturer's entire fleet. By diligently following the dictates of the shift-up light during the vehicle's certification process, the CAFE figure can be substantially increased. Regards, James the Elder
