Subject: 900 transmission shifting mechanism

Does anyone know if there is a best way to get at and repair the transmission shifting mechanism in a 900? My son was playing in the car and forced the transmission mechanism backward - with the shifter locked - to the point where the PRND21 selections have moved (D is where 1 used to be). Also the backup light goes on when the car is in neutral. It's all messed up! The mechanism appears to be all hidden underneath the console, shift handle, interior panels, dashboard, etc. I'm hoping that there is some magic way of getting at it to replace the mechanism. (There are shims available, at the transmission itself, to make minor corrections; but this isn't minor!)
