I would imagine that the wheel would move slightly towards the front of the car, but not so much as to make contact with the wheel arch. For that I would imagine a greater force from behind as the wheel would have to overcome parts (like the sway bar) still trying to keep the wheel in position. I would not expect some fantastic great force that suddenly pushed the wheel down through the pebbles. > To me it sounds a lot more sensible than 'your sidewall has some damage > therefore your suspension snapped with no other damage apparent to other > components in the same load path'. But your car had damage on other parts, or at least damage to other parts of the trailing link. If the link broke due to material defects you would not have the indentions from the screw threads in the bushing as seen in pivture 11 in the test report, nor would the link have the bending shown in picture 7 or the twist shown in picture 9. > There is a downwards component of force I think. The force the the wheel sees through the wheel bearing is the same even when the link is broken. That link "only" keeps the wheel in the correct position. The reason why the parts of the broken link is at different height is that nothing is fixing its position. The part still on the car is free to move up and down, the part still on the wheel will move up and down with the weel. When the car is liften, as it is in the pictures in the test report, the wheel will move down and take the link with it. I still think that the left rear wheel hit some fixed object while the car was moving backwards at high speed. -- Göran Larsson hoh AT approve DOT se I was an atheist, http://home DOT swipnet DOT se/hoh/ until I found out I was God.
