Ah, I see it - odd that the "not acceptable" comment is in a different font than the rest of the report. Just odd, that's all. Cementite, a compound of iron and carbon, is found in most steel (in combination with ferrite and pearlite). Yes it is brittle, and hard. I wouldn't think its presence surprising, but maybe the percentage is abnormally high, perhaps an anomally of the heat treating process? Still, I wouldn't blame the failure on that, at least not exclusively. And certainly not with so vicious and intense an attack. Thousands of those pieces come out of the same mold, the same oven, the same batch of crude metal, at the same factory, with the same people... As well, I'm no expert, and not that Saab isn't capable of fudging a report, but their analysis seems extraordinarily complete and honest. Given Saab's safety record and safety advocacy, and the fact that you are dealing with Saab in Europe as opposed to (ugh) GM over here in North America, I'm sorry, but I'm inclined to "side" with them. I can honestly say that this incident will not affect my purchase of another Saab at all - nor my father, who also drives one. You may think that the rest of us are putting our lives at risk by driving a Saab, but that is misguided contempt from a bad experience. If you really believed that, you wouldn't drive at all, for fear of drunk drivers, a flat tyre from a stray nail on the roadway, winter ice, etc. - far more likely occurences than a snapped suspension control arm. My $0.02 Cheers, and good luck. Scott. BTW, what are you going to replace the Saab with (just out of curiousity)? carrutnnopsameja.com wrote: > > > And where (or who) does this statement come from: > > "SAAB admit that there is an unacceptable flaw in the cast suspension > > component" > > Page 1, question section has the reference.
