There is a bit of a lip, as your put it, but it is certainly quite a small one. It is a much smaller liftover height than what you'll find in many other cars in its class. You'll also find that the hatch opening is bigger than anything you'll find on the car side of an SUV, which tends to make up for a multitude of sins when you're trying to shoehorn large things into your Saab.
