Subject: When did Saab change trunk design?

I have a classic Saab, '86 900, and the trunk opening has no lip. This makes it easy to SLIDE heavy and/or bulky items in and out. I recently looked at a '97 4-door 900. It had about a 4 inch lip. To remove any item from the trunk requires lifting with your back. To those with young backs or those who believe they never will hurt their back, this is no problem. That was me twenty years ago, but now I am painfully aware of the gradual effects of aging. The question is, when did Saab change the 900 trunk design? Should I look for a 900 94 or older? Saab has put a great amount of effort in designing and advertising the 9-5 Wagon and the benefits of its sliding cargo compartment board option. Does this mean that Saab intends to market the 9-3 is for twenty somethings and the 9-5 wagon is for those over forty?
