Subject: a few question before I pull the head

So I've decided to pull the head off my '85 900T 16v, and have it rebuilt (why? because I'm almost sure it has a burnt valve). Before I get started, maybe someone who's done it before can answer a few questions: 1) Is it possible to lift out the head without removing the hood? 2) Is it better to remove the exhaust manifold entirely, or should it be seperated from the turbo and remain attached to the head? 3) The Haynes manual says there are "torx type cylinder head retaining bolts". However, after pulling the valve cover today and looking, it appears that a 12mm socket will fit the bolts. Will it, or should I go buy the torx? Thanks, very much, in advance.
