I needed to refill the hydraulic system for the power roof in my 1990 classic 900 cabriolet yesterday. SAAB is great, but the prices for the recommended fluids for these things makes you think they are made from piss that flows from the Golden Goose. After the adventure I had tracking down a suitable fluid for the power steering system last year (the prices were unbelievable but I solved the problem eventually), I knew that this oil was going to be even more exotic and expensive. I was right. SAAB dealers here in Sydney Australia wanted $47 for a small bottle, the size of which was uncertain, but thought to be around 370ml or so. That makes the price around $130 a litre! You gotta be bloody joking. No way, Jose. Not THIS little black duck. After going through the R&D department and Aeronautical Availability department of Shell Australia I ended up buying a 1 litre can from the guys who drive out onto the tarmac and refuel the planes at Bankstown airport. The price? $11 for a 1 litre can, $54 if I wanted 5 litres. The latter will do an entire garage full of cars for 5 years. Just a bit cheaper, huh? The fluid is Aeroshell Fluid 41 (superclean) and it's made in Hamburg, apparently. You should be able to get it from any Shell refuelling depot at your local airport. Just thought someone would find this information useful. I just object to the stupid prices charged for standard products with SAAB part numbers on them. -- Our OS who art in CPU, UNIX be thy name.
