Subject: Help, blown headgasket and yoohoo!

A few weeks ago, posted a message about an 87 900 S 16 V (non turbo), blowing white smoke. Didnt get any responses, but I have searched Deja News for the relevant posts on head gaskets, etc. Anyway, finally got to the car this weekend, and got the head off, taking it down to a shop today to have it checked. However, Im really worried about the engine. The headgasket going, apparently, got coolant into the oil, and there is brown sticky yoohoo stuff all thru out the head, and of course, the engine. It all started, driving the car back from the parts store, suddenly started spewing white smoke. However, I dont believe the car was driven a very long distance (few minutes, couple of miles) with the coolant being sucked into the #4 piston. Anyway, my question is, is the engine most likely toast? If not, how do I get that brown sludge out of the block and timing chain? Please help!
