What the mechanic told you is mostly likely correct--there are some fluids made for manual transmissions which are better than the stock stuff and can be dyed red. It is most unlikely that they put ATF in there. Probably something like RedLine MTL or BG Synchroshift. You might want to check back and find out exactly what was put in there, but I wouldn't panic.
