Had such a problem on a Audi once. After much trouble discovered that apparently good ground strap had turned to something other than copper,(read slightly higher than normal resistance) and replaced it. Problem disappeared. Tip for all you mechanics: connect a voltmeter to each end of the ground strap, run starter motor, if meter reads more than half a volt ground strap is not too good.
