My '86 900 has what has been described as a rough ride, so maybe the changes occurred long before 1996. However, the 900 has no body roll, no front end dive or rear end squat. It takes turns like it is on railroad tracks. This is what I consider performance handling. For this type of handling, I will put up with the "rough ride". I never drove a 99, so I don't know if it handles the same as the 900s. You never did define what you meant by "excellent" handling, as this is a phrase abused by many ads ranging from Lincoln town cars to pick-up trucks. Something is definately lacking with the new body style.
