Turbos use the exhaust gas to spin a shaft which powers a "fan" to pump fresh air into the engine. This allows more air and fuel to be fed into the engine for more power. This give you more power, but will reduce mileage, if you base it on the same engine. The advantage of the turbo is that it allows the same CAR to have the same acceleration from a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine as a 6 cylinder non-turbo engine.
