Subject: Re: Gas mileage?

You did not say what engine you had, but the advertised figure is about 18 to 19 mpg City with an automatic with either the 2.3 4-cyl or the V-6. Check the obvious, alignment, tire pressure, brakes, transmission fluid level - which should be part of routine maintenance anyway. You also did not say how you determined you gas mileage. Are you relying on the computer or are you basing this on the odometer reading and number of gallons when you fill up the tank? I assume the 9-5 has a locking gas cap door, but is it possible that someone is siphoning gas? I would bet the 18 mpg figure is based on conservative driving habits. Do you accelerate from a stop like you have an egg between you foot and the gas pedal? Do you anticipate stops and brake gently or slow down soon enough to avoid coming to a complete stop at a light? Not likely! Another possible explanation could be driving with the brake and gas at the same time. There are people who do that, some by mistake (wide feet) or as a racing techique for cars with turbos and manual transmissions.
