Subject: Trip Computer

Hi all, My 900SE is equipped with a trip computer that will show: 1. the average fuel comsumption based on last 20mins driving 2. the D.T.E. (distance to empty?) I assume that there is an electronic device that keeps track of the gas available in the tank. The D.T.E. is then derived from the fuel consumption data. eg. If avg. consumption is 12.0L/100KM and there are 36L in the tank, then the D.T.E is 300KM. Am I correct? However, in actual situation, I realise that while the D.T.E. is always prompt to change according to driving condition (e.g., when I drive from city into highway, the D.T.E. may increase from 300KM to 400KM), the fuel consumption data is rather slow to respond, even though it has an accuracy correct to 0.1L/100KM. My experience tells me that when D.T.E. increase from say, 300KM to 400KM, the fuel consumption data is always slow or simply not to respond. Even the data is updated, it is not changed in a way to correspond the changes in D.T.E. (eg. assuming that the gas left remains constant for a while, the corresponding change in fuel consumption should be from 12.0L/100KM to 9L/100KM so as to give a change of D.T.E. from 300KM to 400KM. In fact, the NEW fuel consumption data should be even less than 9L/100KM as less gas is left behind. But my trip computer never gives a reading lower than 10L/100KM) Questions : 1. Why is that the fuel consumption data is slow to change? 2. Do you think the D.T.E. is accurate enough to rely on? 3. Why don't the Saab engineers consider to simply supply the 'amount of gas available'? I think it is more direct and we can judge by ourselves when to refill. Sorry for the sluggish descriptions, but I really hope someone could help to answer my querry. Thanks.
