JJM: are you sure it's "crankshaft" pulley and not "idler pulley" I have an 87 9000 since new (same or very similar engine, I think, but installed differently) and about every 3 years an idler pulley for the main serpentine belt (and maybe one of the other belts) goes. Once the pulley actually split in two, other times it just squeaks like crazy from a worn bearing. About a hundred buck repair. There may also be a leaking seal which requires removal or maybe replacement of the crank pulley to fix it. 150k cars leak and squeak -- it's very hard to define "normal." Seems to me you should have noticed a very audible noise, or a very different change in engine behavior. No reason not to trust a good mechanic.
