My '88 900 (8v) had similar symptoms about a month ago. It too got a little better after sneaking into first gear and driving for a bit, but still wanted to stall about half the time I'd put the clutch in at a light. My mechanic installed a new O2 sensor, new spark plugs + wires, and cleaned out the throttle body. It wasn't cheap, about $500 CDN, but the car runs like a champ now.
