Nate, The sending unit is part of the fuel pump in the tank. Being a variable resistance device it is very sensitive to foriegn matter. An old car gets gunk in the fuel system and gauges get flakey. Two solutions come to mind, a new car or a new pump/sender, neither of which are cheap. otherwise learn to live with a jumpy gauge. Old Mr J
