I have this same problem with my '87. I talked to an indy Saab mechanic (who is a Saab master tech) who said this is just a quirk of the car. As long as the gauge still goes up and down, it's all right. I've just learned to live with it. Mine usually starts jumping at <1/2 tank. However, it's still fairly accurate and hasn't gotten stuck any where. Paul (Remove "spamthis" to reply)
