Subject: Re: 91 900 Odometer Stopped

Mick It is a common problem to have the odometer and trip meter stop working in Saab 900 cars. I have had three 900's in the past two years and the odometers and trip meters in each of them did not work. In fact this appears to a common trait among VDO odometers--even those in Porche cars. You would not have to replace the instrument cluster. It can be fixed. You just have to fuss with it a bit to get everything detached so you can extract the cluster. I have found a few people indicate that it is not good to reset the trip meter when the car is in motion. The notion is that this would strip out the plastic gears in the odometer portion if the instrument. The technician that fixed mine--in the one car that hasn't been wrecked after I got it--lamented that VDO didn't use bronze gears. He also didn't think setting the trip meter with the car moving was a problem. Who knows, maybe he wants to see me in his shop again. Good luck. Tony Aalvik
