Subject: 9000 blower motor

I have an '87 9000 Turbo. A couple of weeks after I began using the A/C this summer, the blower fan started acting up. Sometimes, it's fine. Other times, it never begins blowing after the A/C kicks on. Sometimes, it recovers and acts normally after a few minutes of driving. When I cut off the A/C in Economy mode, the fan works fine, sometimes not. I've checked the fuses and wires I can get to and I've checked the part I can see after removing the vent grill above the blower motor. Before getting into the hassle of getting the old blower out and replacing (I've checked the sites on removal & replacement), are there any other tests or fixes I should try? I've been assuming the motor is not frozen up, since high speed sounds just like it used to. Thanks for any advice.
