Subject: Re: Amsoil Synthetic in my 91 9000s

hello, I have known of several people who adamantly insist on only Amsoil in their cars. the thing that I have observed is that for it to work well you have to put in their filtration system as well. one of the reasons for changing the oil is that it becomes dirty, more so than the filter can clean out. the oil itself is good for a LONG time. (thus, your tranny oil can go a long time w/o being changed - it doesn't get dirty like engine oil does.) the trick to the Amsoil system is that they put in a different filter unit ("moved" to a different location under the hood, usually by hoses) that will more fully clean the oil. there is also some credence that it is the best "built" synthetic out there. personally, I use Castrol Syntec (probably one of the very best synthetics on the market), and go about 6000-7000 miles per change on my minivan, and will probably go approx 5000-6000 on the Saab (I haven't owned it long enough to have changed the oil other than the very first time right away). the Castrol runs about $3.90 (USD) per quart. for filters I use ONLY Fram filters (the standard type for the minivan, and the "toughgard" type on the Saab - mines a Turbo). as for the ABS - not entirely sure. do you hear the system charging pressure often? (the little "grrrrrrrrrt" noise you may hear after using the brakes?) if it is, then it might be some kind of vacuum problem - but definitely don't quote mo on that. my Saab is an '87 900 Turbo 16v and has no anti-lock, but my '91 Plymouth Grand Voyager (3.3 v6) does. I have a similar problem w/ the anti-lock on it, but since anti-lock doesn't affect whether or not the brakes actually work I've been ignoring it. hope this was at least a little helpful... -- Nate t.
