Subject: Combined Brake/Clutch Wierdness?

Hi, I have an interesting if somewhat convoluted problem. I have an '88 9000 Turbo with a 5-speed, and it has developed two problems which may be directly related. On a recent trip to a hilly area, I wore the brakes down to the point where they were making a distressing steel-on-steel noise (sort of a hollow grinding sound) which seemed to be coming primarily from the front of the car. This began to happen on a mountainous pass, and I therefore made much use of the lower gears in order to slow down through the steep 20-mph downhill curves of this particular road. Once I got into town, however, I noticed two very severe problems. Most obviously, the brakes were shot. They were fairly ineffective and even moderate pressure on the pedal caused it to fail and go straight to the floor. More disturbing, though, was the change in shifting. As soon as I came away from the first stoplight, I noticed that what I thought was first gear was really third. Convinced that I had made some mistake, I tried to shift over into first, but couldn't. It was as though the whole shift- pattern somehow moved to the left, omitting first and second. To make a long story short, my questions are as follows: do the braking and shifting problems have the same mechanical root? If so, what do I do about it? If the two problems are separate (ie. if I messed up shift-gear up through overuse), how do I readjust it? I can not find any non-factory manuals for my car, and the factory manual seems rather pricey. Any help in this regard would be appreciated. Thank you.
