Subject: Automatic transmission and slowdown by motor

I have a 9000 Turbo with automatic transmission. I will leave for Alps and now I want to know if I could use engine for slowdown (using for instance 1 or 2 gear instead of D). The friend of mine said, use gear 1 below the speed of 80km/h. Saab dealer recommend to use only brakes because of the oil of automatic gearbox warms too much. I replace disks and other brake parts a moment ago, but those have a hard time if I must use merely brakes (I should drive many times up and down). If I use 1 or 2 gear, Is it expected other problems in the gearbox as hot oil?
